Where Should I Practice Yoga?

As a Yoga Teacher, students often ask me “where should I practice yoga“. It is a simple question yet loaded with many answers.

Yoga, in its truest form, is a living science. The ancients used yogic techniques to prepare their body and mind to sit still in meditation. Nowadays, many people come to yoga as a form of stress management or a form of physical exercise. For many people, their first formal introduction to yoga comes in the form of a yoga class at a health club.

Learning yoga under the guidance of a qualified instructor offers you the opportunity to learn correct postures, alignment, and techniques. As you become more familiar with the poses, you may decide you wish to practice at home.

Practicing at home allows you the work on poses.

Practicing at home allows you the flexibility to work on poses which you find more challenging in class. Or, you can spend the time going deeper into your favorite pose.

The more you practice yoga, the more you realize just how powerful yoga is as a tool to help you get through your day. A client of mine was going through a painful divorce. She had been married for over 20 years and found the whole divorce and subsequent court process extremely wearying and worrying.

Every morning she would get up before her children woke up and spend 10 – 30 minutes in quiet meditation and practicing a few simple yoga poses. She found this simple routine gave structure and purpose to her day; at a time when everything felt dark and alien.

Another client of mine had a very hectic work schedule. He would arrive at work at 7 pm. Every day, he would work through his lunch break and still struggle to leave work on time. Mealtimes consisted of food on the run or a take away on the way home from a late-night presentation. His health was suffering.

His doctor advised him to take up yoga or meditation to reduce his risks of high blood pressure and high cholesterol. With my help, my client managed to introduce six easy chair yoga stretches into his workday. He did these stretches every day, especially when he felt tired or irritated by colleagues.

The stretches only took a few minutes yet gave his body a much-needed rest and relief from the punishing schedule he was under. Over the next couple of months, my client noticed a relief from low back pain, his eating habits changed and he feels more in control of his workload.

How Often Should You Practice Yoga?

Traditional practice time for Yoga is 24 hours a day. However, even some fully-fledged yoga practitioners do not perform postures or other positions for more than 1 or 2 hours a day. Not to mention the few practitioners that do not practice any physical exercises at all but rather focus exclusively on the meditation side of Yoga.

Some people find it difficult to carve out a piece of their schedule to dedicate to regular Yoga practice; additionally, some people find it impractical or even impossible to find this much time. However, one can still benefit greatly from Yoga by simply attending classes twice a week. It might even be beneficial for a busy individual to attend a class once a week as it will help to bring balance into their hectic lifestyle.

Many find that they have small opportunities during the day to work in several Yoga poses or perhaps complete a few breathing exercises. These can be done just about anywhere such as during a ride in a car or while you are on your lunch break. Determining how much time you want to dedicate to practicing your Yoga postures will depend entirely on your goals and how quickly you wish to achieve them.

How many hours a day should you practice yoga?

You might want to consider beginning with taking 15 minutes out of your day, twice a week to practice your Yoga. After you have successfully used your 15 minutes for a month or so, consider upping the amount of time to 30 minutes, and continue to increase the duration or frequency of your Yoga Time until you are satisfied with your schedule.

A Yoga Practice Post Conclusion

If you have lots of time to dedicate to Yoga then it can be very beneficial to practice Yoga on a daily basis. It is just as important for those with lots of time to set goals for themselves as it is for people with limited time.

By setting realistic goals for yourself you will be able to relax while practicing your Yoga. Stressing out over how to accomplish your Yoga goals will have a negative effect on your life.
